Why do I need to have x-rays? Won't they cause cancer?
South Hill Gentle Dentistry John D. Kimball III, D.D.S. 509.535.8838
X-rays show many things that we simply cannot see, including bone loss, tooth decay, impacted teeth, some tumors, and cysts.

Any radiation, including that from standing in the sunshine, carries a possible risk of cancer.

From an article on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_radiography):

"The dosage of X-ray radiation received by a dental patient is typically small, equivalent to a few days' worth of background radiation environmental radiation exposure, or similar to the dose received during a cross-country airplane flight."

That report was about dental x-rays using film.

We have lowered the very low risk from dental x-rays by switching to digital imaging—which uses about 80% less radiation than older film techniques.
