What’s the latest word on the safety of amalgam fillings?

Over the last few years, concerns have again been raised about silver fillings, otherwise called amalgams.

Amalgams contain mercury which alone can be toxic--in an amalgamated state the toxicity is reportedly minimal. Some people think that amalgams are responsible for causing a number of disorders, including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

The American Dental Association, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institue of Health and others report that amalgams are safe. The causes of autism, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis are still unknown. Additionally, there is no solid, scientific evidence to back up the claim that if a person has amalgam fillings removed, he or she will be cured of these or any other disorders.

There have been instances of dentists fraudulently representing that removal of amalgams and replacement with an expensive alternative will be beneficial in alleviating particular ailments.

We continue to place amalgam fillings if patients wish them--which is often the case. They are fast to complete, inexpensive and a good way to control a lot of decayed areas quickly.

That being said: they can be ugly, it is possible that they may contribute to cracking of teeth and some patients simply do not like them.

We have many alternatives available if you do not like silver fillings.
